ABOUT
The Moses Brown bird collection, housed in the reception room near the front door of Middle House, contains 287 individual creatures, including 261 birds of 191 unique species. According to a plaque on the display, it was "Presented to Friends School by its Officers, 1861."
This website was created as a senior project by Eli Reville '21, along with compiling a complete list of the creatures available for download here, along with being housed in the school archives to aid in future study of the collection.
All confirmed names and range maps were sourced from Birds of the World, a publication of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology:
Birds of the World (S. M. Billerman, B. K. Keeney, P. G. Rodewald, and T. S. Schulenberg, Editors). Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, Ithaca, NY, USA. https://birdsoftheworld.org/bow/home
Thank you to Chris Hoyt for enabling this project, Ryan Vemmer for supporting the technical and web development, and Matt Glendinning and the Moses Brown Admissions department for giving me complete access to the bird room for as much time as I needed. Thank you also to Greg Nemes for guidance in web design and his huge help in identifying the many mislabeled species in the collection.
